I joined Skills Universe because I read: “Exploring the world of work. The network for training
companies, facilitators, assessors, HR staff & everyone interested in people at work.”
Working at a training provider I was immediately interested. In the beginning I followed discussions, but
did not participate. I joined the groups that interested me and became more and more interested in
the different discussions – eventually I started participating. Skills Universe became a wonderful source of education and training matters. I do not always have time to stay abreast with all the policies and changes in education, but by following the discussions and reading the blogs, it kept me up to date with many changes.
Since last year it is a source of information for my master’s degree and I also share what I am learning.
When we discuss interesting topics and/ or I learn more about education I share it on Skills Universe.
Members like Sylvia, Ashwell, Des and Leon are sometimes my ‘source’ of information when I need clarity on
information regarding certain topics regarding my studies. So there is a support system for me in this forum.
Currently I am busy with an assignment on ‘civil societies’ and the World Bank’s definition of civil society
triggered my mind … Is Skills Universe a civil society?
Definition: “the term civil society to refer to the wide array of non-governmental and not-for-profit
organizations that have a presence in public life, expressing the interests and values of their members or
others, based on ethical, cultural, political, scientific, religious or philanthropic considerations. Civil
Society Organizations (CSOs) therefore refer to a wide of array of organizations: community groups, non-
governmental organizations (NGOs), labor unions, indigenous groups, charitable organizations, faith-
based organizations, professional associations, and foundations”(Worldbank, 2010).
