SADTU in Gauteng convened a meeting with the following role players in the education system, COSATU, NASGB, ANC, COSAS and SACP to brief and discuss with them the current challenges facing the education system in the Soweto Township.
The meeting deliberated on the challenges and resolved as follows.
- All the progressive forces will need to bring stability to the education of the working class people in the township.
- The Soweto education summit should proceed as planned and without any hindrances.
- All the teachers are expected and required to ensure that they are at school and teaching.
- The teachers should ensure that they do not attend court cases during school time.
- Leadership of SADTU will provide all the necessary support to comrade Moss Senye, SADTU Gauteng Central Region.
- The meeting further agreed that the statement issued by COSAS calling learners to hit back against educators who administer corporal punishment will have serious negative impact to the stability of the schools in the Province. Hence COSAS was requested to withdraw the statement.
- Learners should be in class learning and accord their educators the necessary respect.
- The meeting further noted that already one teacher has been stabbed by a learner and such was strongly condemned by the meeting.
- Learners should be in class learning and accord their educators the respect due to them.
The department of education should also provide the necessary services to schools.
The meeting is calling for calm in all of the schools in Soweto and the entire Province. The meeting further agreed that court processes should be allowed to unfold without any further disturbance to education delivery in pursuance of the Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign.
