𝗝𝗢𝗜𝗡 our FREE Zoom “𝗖𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯” on Wed 19th May to dissect and discuss the proposed amendments to the Occupational Health & Safety Act 85 of 93 over the next 90 days.
I hope someone can shed some light for me on the following:
I am new to this and I was led to believe that there are legacy qualifications that do not require workplace experience as part of their POE, (just theory like UNISA) is this true?
Forgo to mention the experience is within the training inducry.

What if I told you that no matter how good your facilitators are as a service provider, there is still some elements that they miss to achieve maximum engagement of learners. We have extroverts and introverts Facilitators but we can make any workshop they facilitate a home for learners.

Lynel, I agree, instead of complaining this is an opportunity to re-think and re-work and improve upon the contribution that an organisation can offer.
The presentation slides I attached are a good example of how SAQA has reworked the functions, and re-combined functions.
Let’s hope that it proves successful.
No problem Sylvia – the recording is very long – (hours long), so I noted in summary. Some items were discussed more than once.
The retrenchments started 6 days ago and will end next week. It is definitely a shock to the education industry, increasing the unemployment rate – and we note, that experts with knowledge will be sitting at home,…[Read more]
That really is a useful overall summary.
I did receive an external email this morning – saying they were cautiously optimistic – this was my response:
“I agree. I had the same feeling. We are in difficult times and here we have competent people thinking strategically to reposition the organisation into a sustainable structure.
SAQA presented to the Higher Education and Training Portfolio Committee on the 5th May 2021.
The following was noted down, whilst I listened carefully to this sad state of affairs. Clearly SAQA is fragile at this moment, and needed to re-structure in order to remain in operation. This meant that from 197 (some positions were not filled and were…[Read more]
Thank you so much Sylvia, I will listen to this now – and if I get time, I will place some points down from the presentation – so interested in how SAQA is going to cope now.
Thank you Sylvia, looking forward to listening later today.
Congratulations to Dr Julie Reddy – the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
I have long held the view when you need difficult conversations to be held, and difficult decisions to be made – appoint a woman.
SAQA have two. Board Chairperson Professor Peliwe Lolwana, and now CEO Dr…[Read more]

Hi Nigel and Graham
I will be pleased to hear how you get on.
I have recently being saying to the professional body that I think it is time that we stand up against the bureaucrats, who have never run a business, never worked in an industrial plant, and do not under industry or how the national economy works.
If they are not assisting in…[Read more]

Agreed Sylvia, unit standards have proven effective in many instances of compliance training and any number of workplace functions that may not be classified as occupations, nor served by a skills programme exceeding the immediate requirements of the employee. While I have always supported QCTO initiatives, I believe they need to pay more…[Read more]

Saiosh along with IWH are having a meeting with QCTO this morning to discuss the need for recognition of short regulatory courses that do not meet the QCTO Skills Programme requirements and are shorter then 8 credits and may not necessarily not be a persons Qualification.
Hoping that this will bear fruit as it needs to be addressed…[Read more]

QCTO made this decision – based upon what practical experience in the workplace?
I can immediately think of the Counterbalance Truck – as I recall that is Level 3 & 7 Credits.
There are some very small, but very necessary components of workplaces, that need to be recognised.

Good day all
Yes, Saiosh has submitted an number of Occupational Health & Safety Skills programmes to the QCTO for registration, however with the QCTOs “newset” policy that Skills Programmes need to meet a minimum of 8 credits to be registered is proving to be problematic.
Saiosh along with IWH and a number of other professional bodies are now…[Read more]
