Lynel, I agree, instead of complaining this is an opportunity to re-think and re-work and improve upon the contribution that an organisation can offer.
The presentation slides I attached are a good example of how SAQA has reworked the functions, and re-combined functions.
Let’s hope that it proves successful.
No problem Sylvia – the recording is very long – (hours long), so I noted in summary. Some items were discussed more than once.
The retrenchments started 6 days ago and will end next week. It is definitely a shock to the education industry, increasing the unemployment rate – and we note, that experts with knowledge will be sitting at home,…[Read more]
That really is a useful overall summary.
I did receive an external email this morning – saying they were cautiously optimistic – this was my response:
“I agree. I had the same feeling. We are in difficult times and here we have competent people thinking strategically to reposition the organisation into a sustainable structure.
SAQA presented to the Higher Education and Training Portfolio Committee on the 5th May 2021.
The following was noted down, whilst I listened carefully to this sad state of affairs. Clearly SAQA is fragile at this moment, and needed to re-structure in order to remain in operation. This meant that from 197 (some positions were not filled and were…[Read more]

I am with you Des, we did not see this coming. I wonder if there are going to be retrenchments in the Councils and SETAs? I see in the news today, that SARS was not even able to pay salary increases, due to financial reasons.
Thank you so much Sylvia, I will listen to this now – and if I get time, I will place some points down from the presentation – so interested in how SAQA is going to cope now.

Congratulations to Dr Julie Reddy – the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
I have long held the view when you need difficult conversations to be held, and difficult decisions to be made – appoint a woman.

Hi Leon, I think you are looking for something specific here, perhaps I can share some documents with you.
There are so many guides, policies and regulations (which are not always consistent with each other!), but as long as you stay out of any area within DHET’s scope and do not misrepresent your status to a degree that it could be interpreted as “accredited”, then all is fine. It is unfortunate that many people have crossed the line by wording…[Read more]

Agreed Sylvia, unit standards have proven effective in many instances of compliance training and any number of workplace functions that may not be classified as occupations, nor served by a skills programme exceeding the immediate requirements of the employee. While I have always supported QCTO initiatives, I believe they need to pay more…[Read more]

QCTO made this decision – based upon what practical experience in the workplace?
I can immediately think of the Counterbalance Truck – as I recall that is Level 3 & 7 Credits.
