Theuns Laubscher replied to the topic Education standards: are we undervaluing our children? in the forum Basic and Higher Education 10 years, 1 month ago
Thanks Zerelde for this informative link. I’d like to add a few comments:
1. In my opinion, the issue of the drop-out rate during the FET phase (Grade 10 to 12) is contentious and cannot simply be linked to poor education in the previous years of study (I’m sure it plays a major part). Many socio-economic factors come into play, as well as…[Read more] -

Just a follow-up to my previous mail.
I see on the SAQA homepage that the rotating advertisement at the top of the page for the NQF and Career Advice helpline advises students as follows:
“To secure your future career pathway TODAY, check if the insitution you want to study at is officially registered and the qualification you are interested in…[Read more] -

Hi Sylvia
The pass percentages for each subject have not been published by the DoBE for 2012. I think the last year that all subject pass rates were published were 2010. The DoBE only published the comparative results of the Top 11 most popular subjects. When we analysed the pass percentages per subject a few years ago, we found that nearly half…[Read more] -

Hi Bernard
I posted the reply below in another forum. A joint clarification is probably not going to happen. Besides the notice published by the Minister referred to below, I have seen two articles written by journalists that still say that students must demand that the private FET College is registered (irrespective of what they offer). You can f…[Read more] -

Hi Sylvia
This is just an update on the issue regarding the Joint Communique of 2012 and the deregistration of private FET providers that do not offer Umalusi qualifications.
I see in today’s New Age newspaper is a message to the Matric Class of 2012 and out-of-school youth from Minister Nzimande, giving them advice about the process for…[Read more] -

Hi Carla. Thanks for your input. I agree that the intention is an interim solution. However, the result is that FET providers are being asked to deregister themselves in (arguably) contravention of the FET Colleges Act and Regulations. Surely a common legal principle is that you cannot administratively make a rule that is in contravention of…[Read more]

Hi Hannes. Thanks for your summary. I also attended and agree with you regarding some inappropriate behaviour or attitude from some providers. I also agree that Dr Buthelezi always deals with whatever comes his way in a very professional and rational manner.
I work for one of the biggest private education groups, so naturally we take more time to…[Read more] -

Hi Marianna
Herewith my understanding:
1. Learnership agreements with private providers will stop. They will still continue with public providers, and public providers can use privates to run learnerships, but the primary contract will be with a public provider, and not private providers anymore. When this will happen, I don’t know.
2. The…[Read more] -

Please note that the DHET workshop at PC Training in Church Street has moved to Wednesday, 31 October. Same venue, same time, but 1 day later.

Hi Marianna
I will venture to answer this one as well. For the past 4 years (since 1 January 2008), Umalusi has acted as the body throught whom all providers of FET had to go in order to get registration with the DHET. This fuction of Umalusi is mandated in the FET Regulations. For example, if you were offering Services SETA programmes and wanted…[Read more] -

Of course, point 4 should say de-register, not re-register… Sorry for that.

Hi Marianna
Herewith my understanding of the issue:
1. The FET Colleges Act and the FET Regulations require that anyone who wants to offer FET (defined as the training toward qualifications on Level 2 to 4 of the NQF) must be registered by the DHET. This requirement is clear.
2. Since 2008, when it became mandatory for FET providers (offering…[Read more]
