In support of clarifying the need for various participants in the process of LMO training, attached is a PPT presentation comparing required processes in comparison to actual processes in effect. Addressing the faults in current practices will assist in implementing appropriate and compliant practices.

Hi Lynel,
I think the main concern is how to get moving again within the restraints of the COVID restrictions. Online training is obviously a core element of addressing these constraints, but as you know, most of the SDP’s are in the SMME category with limited resources to implement a change of this nature. Many of these providers are involved in…[Read more] -

Hi Sylvia,
And all those involved in this exercise, this is a mammoth task and all efforts are welcomed and appreciated.Wait for it…… However,in terms of experience and membership, APPETD by far, does not represent the vast majority of private training providers who DHET refer to as “suitcase” SDP’s. When reviewing the APPETD Membership…[Read more]

Hi Sylvia,
I did this many years ago when I wanted to check if a training provider had uploaded any of my results for the ODETDP Diploma. (Not one upload despite having successfully completed 98% of the outcomes!)At that stage, as I recall, it only took about two weeks to get the results. Not sure of the volumes they now have to process in…[Read more]

Well said Deon, and don’t forget that if we educate our customers as well, the illegal providers will be restricted in where they can operate. Most of our problems can be blamed on a general lack of knowledge or appreciation of the Regulatory requirements, which are, after all, compulsory like any other Regulatory requirement.

Yesterday I had a relatively long standing accredited LMO training provider query what DMR stood for?
Do I need to emphasise the need for LMO training providers and practitioners to improve their knowledge of the Regulatory environment in which they are supposed to be operating?

Thank you Sylvia, I think those with misleading offerings of learning material have tried very hard to make use of free advertising and I have no doubt they have managed to gouge unsuspecting victims. Such a pity that you have to become someone else’s conscience (if they have any!).

Good morning all,
As an update to the challenge test, I have available an LMO Guide which addresses common issues regarding requirements of the Driven Machinery Regulations 2015 and NCOP. Should you wish to make use of this Guide, it is available for R100.00. It addresses many misconceptions and misinterpretations of these Regulatory…[Read more] -

Regarding the challenge, I now also have a Guide document for those perhaps less familiar with LMO regulatory requirements. Awareness of these requirements should be a necessity for anyone dealing with forklift and crane operator training as it is a Regulatory requirement.

Just as a follow on to the previous post regarding the challenge, it may also be an idea to establish a “panel” of suitably knowledgeable people who can address LMO provider questions and issues. At present there are very few who can provide appropriate answers, at least those who are accessible and consistent in approach to the DMR and NCOP r…[Read more]

Having moderated many TETA provider assessments over the years, it has become apparent that many providers, assessors and moderators dealing with Lifting Machine Operator (LMO) (Forklift and crane operator) training are not as familiar with the Regulatory requirements prescribed by the Driven Machinery Regulations (DMR) and incorporated National…[Read more]

Nigel Shipston replied to the topic DHET reverses position on registration of SDPs with DHET in the forum Training Service Providers 11 months, 1 week ago
Apologies, read that one wrong!
Nonetheless, it is important for SDP’s to prepare for this so that we don’t get caught on the 2017 panic attack. It is interesting to note before Section 3 talks about “confusion, frustration and uncertainty within the skills development sector”. Would really be interesting to see the first two sections in full.

Hi Sylvia,
I think the most important thing here is that Registration is temporarily not a legal requirement, but that it will be soon enough again when all the relevant Acts are aligned. The second point is that they are going back to where they should have started according to the White Paper issued by DHET in 2013. They themselves laid out…[Read more] -

Hi Gerhardus,
It appears you have been subject to misinformation regarding accreditation for First Aid. It is not necessary to go only to HWSETA as the regulations were amended to permit you to achieve accreditation with any SETA that holds First Aid unit standards within their scope. There are some 11 or 12 SETA’s who can accredit you for First…[Read more] -

Wonderful!
We all know how consistent processes are between SETA’s and that standardisation appears to be a foreign concept. Surely DHET aren’t going to simply wash their hands on this issue? “Cry ‘Havoc!’, and let slip the dogs of war,”.
