Hi Johan. A colleague at a TVET college recently bought in this qualification and the learning materials were totally unusable – even though they did due diligence. The College had to bin it. If you send me your email address, I can put you in touch with her. I’m sure you will benefit from hearing about her experience.

Louise Sterling replied to the topic INTELLECTUAL RIGHTS OF LEARNING MATERIALS in the forum Learning Material Development 5 years, 8 months ago
Sorry to hear this Nigel. The same thing happened to Eduwrite with our Level 4 ECD qualification. The unscrupulous seller (I don’t know how they acquired our material) could sell at a cheap price because they had no development costs. I was in the absurd situation of having to drop my prices because I was competing with my own material!!!

Louise Sterling replied to the topic HWSETA extension of scope in the forum Accreditation Processes 5 years, 8 months ago
Glad to see this issue come out into the open. A client who is a well-established training provider was hit by this requirement about 1.5 years ago. His company focus on leadership and management training in HR contexts; they also offer mentoring and coaching. He could not get HWSETA to accept that as a business owner he did not have to have a…[Read more]

Louise Sterling replied to the topic The Value of the Humanities in the forum Learning Material Development 6 years, 2 months ago
Tass – just to be clear, she was not discounting all of the Humanities as a discipline; she was arguing that the current Humanities degrees should be made “useful” by linking them to occupations so that students graduate with a degree that “can be slotted into the workplace context. e.g. a BA in Organisational Psychology. There are grave dangers…[Read more]

Louise Sterling replied to the topic Academic Literacy in the forum Learning Material Development 6 years, 4 months ago
I do use plagiarism checking tools in my business. But the red flags are very easy to spot. Often accomplished sounding material in a very short Learner Guide is a clue. Another clue is a Learner Guide developed in week or two that is massive. Also uneven language levels and shifts in tone. As a matter of course, I simply check 3 or 4 random…[Read more]

I guess it brings up the debate – how do you assess the ability to author or develop. Every informal TVET developer will argue that he or she is qualified.
After a lifetime in publishing, I am absolutely clear that any book authored should be developed by a subject expert with both formal qualifications + long experience in the field. However,…[Read more] -

Hannes – it amazes me that materials development in the TVET sector is is completely unregulated.
For many years, the schooling sector has used textbooks produced by the commercial publishers who have their own internal QA and plagiarism checks. They use the same system as Eduwrite – subject expert authors partnered with experienced writers;…[Read more] -

Hi Millie. I have just emailed SAQA with a similar question – but have had no reply. Perhaps if Joe Samuels sees this post he could advise us. My client is overseas, in a country with no formal curriculum. They have expert facilitators trained in the area. They would like to use my materials and offer an accredited certificate from SA. They are…[Read more]
