Hi Sylvia,
The presentation by Neil Pretorius of DRD Gold which can be accessed by the url http://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article/sa-needs-job-creators-says…
identifies a very necessary approach to this challenge.
The engineering community continues to complain about the scarcity of skilled and EXPERIENCED resources in the lower group (…[Read more] -
Chris Reay replied to the topic Zuma won't lead the CEO pay freeze proposal in the forum General – topics not covered by categories 8 years, 3 months ago
Has any ANC politician ever set a leadership example yet? If Zuma ever wanted to demonstrate concern to citizens and voters, he would scrap the obscene amount being spent on the Nkandla “home”. Mac Maharaj refers to the “due processes of decision making in government” for a salary freeze to happen. Well, we all know how long due processes take in…[Read more]

Chris Reay replied to the topic What are the typical characteristics displayed by a learning organization? in the forum Seeking Accreditation or Training material 8 years, 5 months ago
I recommend reading up (some of) the “Fifth Discipline” by Peter Senge.
It followed his research at MIT where he founded the “Center for Organisational Learning” at MIT’s Sloan School.
He makes a very pertinent statement:
In the long run, the only sustainable source of competitive advantage is your organisation’s ability to learn faster than the…[Read more] -
Chris Reay replied to the topic 12 Useful tips on how to use books – other than burning them in the forum Education, ECD, Post-school Education & Training 8 years, 7 months ago
These are great ideas but the inevitable problem of coordination and distribution arises. It would need to have the administration of say an NGO to do this, or some other privately sourced social benefit service to get them to the areas that could benefit.
I listened to the discussion between Cape Talk and the Minister of BE this morning. No need…[Read more] -
Chris Reay replied to the topic Have we let the class of 76 and other South Africans down? in the forum Education, ECD, Post-school Education & Training 8 years, 7 months ago
Your summary, Des, and the inspiration from Dr. Mamphela Ramphele is so pertinent. A key issue in this crisis is the need for responsibility by everyone, including the youth as Tass has quoted. The constant harping by citizens of SA on rights with little if any focus on commensurate responsibility is overwhelming. The responsibility of the…[Read more]

Chris Reay replied to the topic Have the SETAs been gulity of wasting money? in the forum Seeking Accreditation or Training material 8 years, 7 months ago
Hi Des, your question and the lack of answers.
I thought that SETAs such as the Merseta were in fact funding apprenticeships and artisan training. The questionable learnerships have not succeeded in producing properly qualified artisans as the historically proven apprenticeship process was “modified” to be both shorter and cover less training…[Read more] -
Chris Reay replied to the topic Have the SETAs been gulity of wasting money? in the forum Seeking Accreditation or Training material 8 years, 7 months ago
There appears to be a great deal of commonality between the productive output of the SETAs and most of the delivery mechanisms of government departments, provinces and municipalities. When one reads the in the news as to who has ripped off the system this week, who has had the hand in the till, how many CEOs and others are on suspended time (on…[Read more]

Hi Sylvia,
My experience of the FETs is that they are not endowed with the high level of lecturer/trainer that they should be.
Overall the educational system in RSA is generating a lowest common denominator syndrome that is either discouraging or eliminating excellence from the areas where it is so essential, and this in particular is in the need…[Read more] -

Who guards the guards? If we have to rely on government officialdom, then I don’t hold any hope. The process of staffing the various components of the system all suffer from (most likely) jobs for pals and no performance metrics. It is quite amazing how Blade wonders why the SETAs have not performed. The ones that come close have some competence…[Read more]
