Hi Nomonde, is this for Pretoria/Gauteng? Do you need anyone in KZN?

Catherine Martin replied to the topic Occupational and Vocational – definitions in the forum Skills Development Facilitators 7 years, 2 months ago
Hi Sylvia, the MICT SETA attempts to clarify the meaning of PIVOTAL using South Africanisms that we’ve become accustomed to, i.e. that Vocational learning = Nated and NCV, and Occupational learning = unit-standards based (see attached). Not sure if it will help, but we do complicate our lives, don’t we!

Hi William, have you tried re-looking at the content of these unit standards, and possibly moving across to MerSETA, which has a huge number of learning materials – certainly covering all the topics mentioned above?

Actually, Marianna, I think the document is an old one (2012), when Blackburn was going to attend to leadership needs of colleges. A couple of other SETAs also signed a MOU with them. Like the capacitation project, the Blackburn project was rejected by the CEO, and later the Board (I stand to be corrected).

I can confirm that a comprehensive 3-year project was approved by the Services SETA Administrator in 2012, planning the capacitation of public TVET colleges against a number of critical needs. The model looked to use private TVET colleges as facilitators of the change process, whilst moving themselves on to ground that would sustain their own…[Read more]

Hi Tass, I can’t give you specific details but urge you to look at the Sunday Times in about two weeks’ time, and keep on looking at the Government Gazette tenders in the same time frame. More than that, and I may be contravening regulations relating to tenders. Good luck (just to let you know: I don’t select service providers, it’s done by a Committee).

There are a number of consultants, certainly many of them more user-friendly!

Several occupational qualifications have been developed. There are a number of trained practitioners and funding for the curricula has been via GIZ with some SETA support. I suggest you contact the SETA whose scope is related to the occupations you want to develop.

An interesting thought, Sinikelo…we need to invest more, and more wisely, in township schools, plus provide CPD and proper performance management systems for teachers; we also need to M&E the quality of learning. There is no need to bus kids from townships to Model C schools because it’s disruptive and tiring for them, and there are social…[Read more]

Please look at the Services SETA website, on the front page. Bid is for lead moderators and closes on 3rd September. We need all the good people who are motivated to turn the SSETA into a Best Practice operation.

Hi there Roland, the tender process has had to be put in place for the time being, until Services SETA begins to shine up again and move forward. A call to registered moderators on a closed tender received very poor responses, and I decided to help the SETA by placing a notice on this website. I have already received a great deal of interest f…[Read more]

Hi Jacqui, that is a long time to wait. What’s the problem, and can the NEW Services SETA help? Now that the SETA has been weeded of its “former regime” you will find that things start moving – and not only for certain people.

It’s a very good thing to expose people who are in the skills development business to fill their pockets…such people have squandered millions in the past 12 years, taking instead of giving – and in the process helping to keep South Africans unskilled and jobless. South Africa simply cannot afford more shysters. Thank you, Dr Nel – expose t…[Read more]

Sylvia, this sounds interesting and it’s certainly important to feed and clothe the destitute – however, you know the old Japanese proverb. Is there any economic development activity there? I’m in process of completing the book “Banker to the poor” by Mohamed Yunus, what a refreshing alternative to charity! Unfortunately I am going away in the…[Read more]

Catherine Martin replied to the topic SETA grants for internal training in the forum Skills Development Facilitators 10 years, 11 months ago
My thoughts too. In fact, in my experience non-accredited company- or job-specific training is far superior to that received from external providers. EXAMPLE: how does an external provider teach a high speed, high tech packaging machine operator to run his own line, when the provider has never seen a packaging machine? This accreditation no…[Read more]

To my knowledge that’s never been the case (although some SETAs have hinted so, which has made many employers turn down excellent non-accredited training in favour of “Let’s make-our-bux-quick” accredited provider training). You only lose BBBEE points if you run non-accredited internal training. But if the training’s good and helps the company…[Read more]
