For any person who wants to communicate and be understood, it is vital that we are aware of the process from which speech is formed. We are all individuals with different features, some have small and some have large nasal, oral cavities and this contributes to our uniqueness of tone when we speak, endorsing the fact that you can recognize a person with whom you are familiar by their tone if they are in another room and out of view.

Course Content

The content of the “Winning with Words” training programme is practically based and is filled with exercises and activities which focus on the following:

Exploring the use of the voice

Paralinguistics – the judicious use of vocal sounds in words which makes two way communication possible.

Often our managers, lecturers, students, telephonists, receptionists and other “first contact”

staff are misunderstood.

We each often get irritated when we have to repeat ourselves and will rate poor English

as poor communication, lack of empathy and poor customer service.

Understanding this need, the Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Business School (THSBS)

has developed a short effective English Communication training programme aimed

at improving the diction – the pronunciation and enunciation – of all levels of staff.

Successful Speech: A Picture Paints A Thousand Words!

THSBS has designed a very specific English Communication training programme which,

has been developed by educators specialising in language and the dramatic arts.

The course includes an understanding of technical aspects, such as breathing exercises to

improve our diction, comprehensive skill to improve our understanding of the written word

and grammatical skill to produce effective written communication in English.

The “Winning with Words” training programme explores the use of the voice and the art

of articulation. The course investigates the dynamic use of consonants and vowel sounds

to change accents and seeks to master an easy way with grammar.
