A R34 million loan was approved by the National Empowerment Fund to open a high-end boutique store in Joburg.  However the owner, celebrity Khanyi Dhlomo and the transaction are now under scrutiny.

Many are questioning whether a” boutique for the rich” will truly create jobs and further skills development.

Khanyi Dhlomo, a former newscaster holds an MBA from Harvard and started Ndalo Media before venturing into the retail sector. She is considered to be one of Africa’s most successful business women.

They want to be teachers, doctors and scientists, a dream that would not have been possible just ten years ago.

On 18 March, throngs of girls lined up singing and clapping to welcome UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, and Afghanistan’s Education Minister Farooq Wardak to the Ayesha-e-Durrani school in Kabul.

The 57th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UN CSW) is being held in New York, USA, from 4-15 March.

This year's priority theme is: The Elimination and Prevention of all Forms of Violence against Women and Girls.

President Zuma attended the launch of the Stop Rape Campaign in schools in Mitchells Plain.  The launch was hosted by the Department of Basic Education and LEAD SA at Glendale Secondary School on 28 February 2013.  The following is the text of the President's speech.

Good morning to you all.

Thank you for hosting us for this important occasion.

We are here today to share with you a very important message.

2012 Women's Month was launched this weekend by Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma at the University of the Freed State. The Home Affairs Minister who has succeeded at home in improving the performance of her department, recently won election to the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission.  She is therefore well-qualified to speak about the barriers to women achieving success and economic security.


With the aim of contributing to attaining the Millennium Development Goals, in Africa through empowerment of women, Leading Women of Africais creating a platform that enables women in business in South Africa and abroad, supported by Governments, funders, investors and other technical partners, to partner with their counterparts in Africa in order to play significant role in creating and accessing opportunities across sectors on the Continent.
