Having moderated many TETA provider assessments over the years, it has become apparent that many providers, assessors and moderators dealing with Lifting Machine Operator (LMO) (Forklift and crane operator) training are not as familiar with the Regulatory requirements prescribed by the Driven Machinery Regulations (DMR) and incorporated National Code of Practice (NCOP) as they should be.
To this end, I have developed a “challenge” test for all persons involved in the training of LMO’s in order to establish the levels of knowledge of the Regulatory requirements. The challenge is open to all who wish to participate, including employer representatives responsible for LMO training, Provider personnel selling and booking LMO training, learning programme developers, safety officers etc.
The purpose of this exercise is to establish current levels of Regulatory knowledge, with a view to identify means to improve levels of understanding. By doing so, we can vastly improve compliant and effective LMO training and restrict the unethical and illegal practices that plague our training area. This exercise has been presented to the TETA ETQA Manager and ETQA Practitioners and the ETQA Manager has suggested that the challenge be issued as a pilot project. Results will be shared with TETA ETQA for possible future developments to promote and improve the LMO training industry.
The success of this industry and the challenge is based on participation. It is not a competition but rather a means of bringing awareness to all involved in LMO training of the Regulatory requirements against which we should be operating.
