To my own understanding an ETD Practitioner is basically someone who plans, develops, implement and evaluate training and development programs to ensure management and staff acquire the necessary skills and develop the competencies required by an organisation to meet organisational objectives.
a teacher may be identified as person who provides education to learners or students, their role is ongoing and carried out at school or at a formal place for learning.usually to become a teacher one has to obtain a degree or diploma in teaching depending which level you want to be based on(foundation/intermediate or senior)
ETD Practitioners have to attend courses that are occupation directed ETD Practitioner programmes like,
Certificate in Occupation-directed ETD Practice
Train the Trainers Programme
Facilitation Skills for Trainers
Understanding NQF; SAQA & Outcomes-based Training
the designing of outcomes-based learning programmes, writing of unit standards, facilitation skills in outcomes-based training, designing assessments for learning programmes.
Whereas teachers are not involved in designing, they only focus in teaching a curriculum given to them, they are based at school level while ETD Practitioners are organisational based.
This is my own understanding, please correct where you see differences.
So the target population for ETDPs is different fromt he Taget Population for Educators. A good ETDP knows that before any training can take place, a target population analysis, or a needs analysis or a gap analysis should be done. Many teachers don’t do this, exactly be cause the currululum and text books are prescribed. But surely a group of learners in Gauteng with accress to the internet, libraries etc is not the same as a group of learners in Nkowankowa without access to these facilities. So the educator should like his ETDP friend do a proper needs analysis.
SAQA gives us unit standards. The school system have National Curriculum Statements that are also written in outcomes based format. So yes the ETDP will create learning experiences to achieve Specific Outcomes, but shouldn’t it also be what Educators must do?
Educators, like ETDPs must do assessment. It is even said that Educators must do continuous assessment during the year and build up a body of evidence of a learners competence. The n they go and write an exam. For the life of me, I can not see how you test competence by using an assessment tool like an exam. Perhaps this is why people leave the schooling system without skills they can use in the workplace.
So for me, I am still unable to see the difference in the skills set required by an Educator and that required by an ETDP.
