For skills-universe members to share information and discuss issues on Basic and Higher Education

Here is a link to an interview with Eloise Cupido on Ontbytsake in DSTV channel 144: Kyknet.

It is an Afrikaans interview.

We are a newly accredited (with QCTO) private provider offering the Level 4 ECD practitioner training. We started training at the beginning of this year and sent the learners information to the QCTO (Form 1 and Form 2) in March. As yet we have not had confirmation of that email or that our learners are on their system. We are aware of the OQLMS and it was our understanding that we would receive access to this once we were accredited. To date we have not received access to this Information Management System or communication from the QCTO. How do we go about getting access to the OQLMS?

The South African Education Research Association (SAERA) has circulated a document compiled by the COVID-19 Special Interest Group (SIG) - and circulated for comment and contribution.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has issued notice that the May - June examinations has been postponed. That notice covers the:
* amended Senior Certificate (old Matric), and
* National Senior Certificate exams.

This affects an anticipated 350 000 students who either: did not meet the previous exam requirements, or wanted to improve upon their results.

Further details will follow once the arrangements for joint June & November exams are available.

The link to the Second Chance Matric Support Programme is still available on the DBE website.

This report is from the newsletter - Wednesday 8 April 2020 First edition.

"The public broadcaster and the Department of Basic Education have launched a COVID-19 learner support initiative in an effort to limit the impact of the lockdown on the school calendar.

The multimedia learner support initiative, the SABC and the DBE said in a joint statement, is part of the broader efforts to prevent the total loss of the school year, since the lockdown was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

As skills-universe members will know - I am very concerned that we refer to things correctly - like bogus colleges.

Today at his media briefing, Minister Blade Nzimande made a very interesting point - clarifying his title and departmental responsibilities.

So, Dr Blade Nzimande is the Minister of Higher Education Science and Technology,
and his responsibilities are:
the Department of Higher Education and Training, and
the Department of Science and Innovation.

After all the expense of the festive season and holidays for some, comes school and school fees.

This is a reminder of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) judgement, which allows single parents to apply to schools for reduction in their school fees.

The court recognised that is most cases, after a breakup of the relationship or marriage, it is the mother who assumes responsibility for the children.

The following media statement has been issued by the Ministry of Higher Education Science & Technology, & the Government Gazette referred to is attached for your convenience.
