Our heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the millions of suffering Somali people for your generous contributions, warm words of support and ongoing prayers. South African society have opened their hearts for their suffering brethren in Africa; this is truly an African response to an African problem.
A special "thank you" to the South African media who continue to publicise this life saving campaign with great spirit and a special "thank you" to those driving the initiative on the social networks.
Gift of the Givers, in embracing that generous South African spirit of Ubuntu, have increased the humanitarian aid for Somalia, now putting up FOUR flights instead of the one initially planned. The first TWO flights will depart on Sunday, 31 July 2011, with 41 tons of supplies and a team of medical specialists. The THIRD flight departs Thursday, 04 August 2011, and the FOURTH flight on Monday, 08 August 2011.
The medical team comprises three paediatricians, five general practitioners, two medical practitioners with specialisiation in reproductive health, one paramedic skilled in primary health care and six dietitians.
The supplies are high end specialised paediatric ready to drink milk supplements, high energy and protein ready to eat food supplement for children and adults, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, malaria medication, a range of other medical supplies, food items, sanitary pads, personal hygiene items and bottled water.
We have a team on the ground in Mogadishu, have set up our own office in an ex-Minister's house which also has warehousing facilities, have identified several camps where the medical teams and suplies have to be utilised, and are also in negotiations with the different parties to ensure safe and effective passage of our team and supplies.
