RE: QCTO introduces a QR Code to its Occupational Certificate to speed up the verification processes
In its endeavours to remain current with technology, the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) has introduced a QR code functionality to the Occupational Certificates it prints.
According to the Director responsible for Certification and Verification, Annemarie Janse Van Rensburg, “The QR code function will speed up the process of verifying the authenticity of an occupational certificate when the certificate holder presents it to a prospective employer or institutions of higher learning.”
The Chief Executive Officer of the QCTO Vijayen Naidoo described the move as ground-breaking and further reiterated that the initiative will eliminate the long waiting period often experienced when seeking verification feedback from a third party.
“The purpose of this endeavour is to speed up the process of verifying the authenticity of the certificate when presented for employment or study purposes; and /or to the learner him/herself; and make the information easily accessible without paying any fee.”

WHAT IS A QR CODE?
Quick Response (QR) code is a code that is quickly readable by a cell phone or any device with a camera. A QR code can transfer a lot of information using a small area on a document. The coding in a QR code is both horizontal and vertical, which is why so much information can be stored in them.
HOW DOES A QR CODE WORK?
The user must download a QR scanner App to their smartphone or any device with a camera. There are many QR scanner Apps free for download for both Android and iOS devices. The user can read the QR code with the touch of a button.
It is important to ensure that the QR code is on a flat surface and not too close or too far from the smartphone camera. Either of these will prevent the QR scanner App from reading the QR code.
HOW WILL THIS ASSIST WITH THE VERIFICATION OF THE AUTHENTICITY OF OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES?
The prospective employer or institutions of higher learning will be able to scan the QR code using a smartphone that has the QR code App. After scanning the QR code, the user will be re-directed to the QCTO Certification Database.
The prospective employer or institution can then compare the information displayed on the device screen against the information on the presented certificate in real time. Should the requester confirm that the information corresponds in all aspects, the certificate is valid. If there are any details that differ, the certificate may be misrepresented. It is then advised that a formal request be submitted to the QCTO through its verification process.
This will eliminate the waiting period to receive the verification feedback from a third party; the service is free of charge, but data costs applicable to your device will apply.
