    Hi all,

a colleague – Paul Thompson, and I are workin to put together a SMME
networking session for SME’s from the Western, Southern and Eastern
Cape. The idea is to run the session over a two or three day period in
    Port Rlizabeth.
    Programme contents envisaged:

    * Presentation on the problems faced by SME’s in the Cape
    * Highlight areas of potential co -operation as opposed to
    competition.
    * Assist SME’s in creating alliances and synergies.
    * Explore and encourage the development of a “virtual” Business
centre using Skills- Universe as the main platform.
    * Exploration of export markets in EU, Africa, Middle East, South
    East Asia.
    * Business leads for importers
    * Across trade / industry idea exchange
(at tthis stage the agenda is still up for discussion and member’s input
    will be appreciated).

    We also intend to have representation from: Financial Institutions; DTI;
An accountant who specialises in SME’s.
We will approach the LED’s in each area with a view to them assisting
with the promotion of the project as a whole.

Perhaps Microsoft will come on board with some Free Software or at least
offer to discount the purchases of the attendin SME’s.

Finally we will provide a panel of SME development specialists who will
be available for both general advisory services (No Charge) and if
    required, One on One consultations.

We will approach on eof the major banks with a view to sponsorship of a
    venue; refreshments; useful handouts etc.

Comments please one and all, your input will be greatly appreciated

Hi Selwyn, I am an academic (Deputy Dean: School of Business & Management)in Windhoek. I am also the course coordinator for the subjects “Entrepreneurship” and “Small Business Management”. I am also consulting to SME’s (start-up & growth necissities) in Namibia as well as in SA.

I have followed your discussion with some others regarding your involvement in the SMME industry and your initiatives regarding the networking session. Good luck!! I think that if more SME owner-managers could be linked to this platform, they could benefit tremendously from a networking point of view. Skills Portal enables those in need of networking opportunities.

I would like to suggest that you identify SME’s from all over SA and list their contact details plus their products/services on this platform. This will enable trading activities. I am in Namibia and we have similar SME needs here. I could encourage Namibian SME’s to list on this site as well (??import/export opportunities).

Lastly, in true academic fashion: those who are regarded as entrepreneurs (creative-innovative & with risk-taking propensity & pro-active) or those successful SME owner-managers, are distinguished “do-ers”. They do things, try things, sometimes fail, but continue trying. They are tenacious, and nothing will stop them once they see opportunities to make money (sometimes unethical!!).

I am looking forward to some feedback from your initiatives, good luck!

    Regards

    Chris

    Hi Chris

thanks for your input. It is much appreciated. Funny though to meet you in this forum, I recently sent my profile to a Mr Mutilitha – Dept of Trade & Industry I think in response to a request for SMME Development Specialists to register with them.

Are you perhaps aware of any SMME Development opportunities in Namibia??

I you have been following my discussions, you will note that by and large I am non-conformist. I tend to view each case on it’s merit, conduct a reasonable desktop analysis and then make a judgement call. Perhaps, you too would like to review my SMME Development Handbook when I have the first drafts ready? It would be great if we could draw some SMME owners / managers from Namibia to the proposed networking session, sort of give it a more “All Africa” flavour!

    kind regards
