On Sunday 14th April 2024 Minister Blade Nzimande assured attendees at a media session that he is taking action to ensure that students awaiting funding will receive their payments.
The Minister has terminated the services of all National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) Board members and appointed an Administrator - see the full Government Gazette on the following link
The Minister explained that payment problems arose with the appointment of service providers, who failed to deliver, and although he had requested that NSFAS approach the courts to terminate the contracts, this had not happened. The banks have greater capacity to deal with such payments.
In the interim, universities will be making payments, and further arrangements need to be made for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges that do not have the capacity to make payments, such as via banks.
Minister Nzimande strongly rebuffed calls for his resignation - responding that NSFAS is one of the government's success stories - in view of the numbers of students, who have been given access to education by the scheme.
