Minister Nzimande has stated that the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) does not recognise the honorary doctorates conferred by an institution that is not registered with the DHET. The Minister refers to the institution as bogus, as it is not authorised to issue any higher education qualifications or part-qualifications, and consequently, cannot award honorary doctorates.

The institution concerned is the Trinity International Bible University.

The Minister indicated that he has requested the Council for Higher Education (CHE) to publish guidance on the requirements for the awarding of honorary doctorates, and further, that the department is considering taking further action against the institution.

The awarding of the honorary doctorates was covered on social media, and multiple news outlets covered the story and the refutation by the Minister.

The issue of "bogus" institutions has featured in many news reports, and the most common issue has been colleges registering students - and then disappearing with the money - genuinely "fly-by-night" institutions, but more commonly, offering programmes that are not registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

The following YouTube link provides an example of students paying and not receiving the expected education and qualification:

The Higher Education Department has updated the list of Registered Colleges - 149 are listed as of the 1 March 2024 - access on

If you are anyone in your family is looking for a college and it is not listed here - or is listed here but not for the qualification you are looking for, please follow up with the Department to see whether there is a subsequent further update.
