Are you ready for Industry 4.0?

By suzannehattingh, 29 March, 2019

How should we respond to the challenges of the 4th Industrial Revolution? In a presentation in January at the 2019 SALSA Seminar of the Legislatures of South Africa, I posed these questions that we need to ask as individuals, leaders and critical thinkers.
1. What are the main Threats and Opportunities of Industry 4.0 and how they affect my organisation, my workforce and my customers’ needs?
2. How should we redesign our organisation, work processes and employer-worker relationships?
3. How can we best use human skills alongside disruptive technologies so that our skills are augmented by technology?
4. What skills will our workforce need in 2025-2030? What are the best strategies for developing these skills?
5. Is our national skills development system preparing the workforce for the future of work?
6. What are you going to do with the ‘Useless Class’ that “will not be merely unemployed – it will be unemployable.” (Yuval Noah Harari in Homo Deus, p. 379)
7. What will I do to prepare myself for the disruptive, unstable and unpredictable work environment?
8. How prepared am I for the nformal GIG economy where I won’t have a neat job description, a boss, performance management system or a salary and a pension at the end of my working life?

My next presentation is on 11 April at Chartall Business College.
