7 Thoughts for Human Rights Day

By sylviahammond, 20 March, 2014

When Nelson Mandela died I made some notes for an article - on what I thought were the lessons of his life.  I never wrote them up then.  But reading them now they are relevant thoughts for Human Rights Day.

I would like to hear whether you agree or disagree with my thoughts:

1. Democracy does not automatically resolve poverty.

2. There is no dignity or freedom in poverty.

3. There is no enduring/sustainable freedom while others remain in poverty.

4. People who are deprived of human rights and the democratic means to change their circumstances will resort to violence.

5. Consider carefully who are labelled "terrorists" and by whom.

6. The purpose of life is not to acquire as much money and material possessions as possible - at the expense of the planet and others.

7. The work of Madiba has ended, but ours has just started.
