Mthatha - Eastern Cape police have raided an Mthatha business which forges government payslips, identity books and matric certificates, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said Bears furniture shop went to the police after a 39-year-old woman raised suspicions when she tried to open an account.

Investigations revealed that she was unemployed, but had produced a false government payslip and false identity book.

The woman was arrested on Monday and took the police to the business in Mthatha where she had bought the fake documents.

"There were payslips from government departments - national and provincial. Lots and lots and lots," said Fatyela, declining to say how many exactly.

"Also, the Umalusi certificates - lots of them as well. And with good symbols. You'll find As and Bs. You can't get low marks on them."

Another woman was arrested on the premises, but the owner was not present at the time of the raid.

"We expect more arrests soon," said Fatyela.
