Are you interested in research on contributing to the welfare and social service fields in South Africa? Are you committed to a developmental welfare approach?
The Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) at the University of Johannesburg, in association with the National Council of Social Services (NACOSS), invites those who meet the criteria to apply for a generous bursary for a Masters level research degree to develop indicators for developmental welfare in the South African welfare and social service sector. The research will be led by Prof Leila Patel, Director of the Centre for Social Development in Africa.
We are thus seeking a top-class student to apply for the bursary and register for her/his Masters degree. The selected student would need to conduct research on the development of welfare indicators. Depending on their previous degree and their particular interests, the student can choose, from the following list, the degree for which they will register. However, the degree must be on the RESEARCH stream and not a coursework option.
- MA Social Work (research)
- MA Research Psychology
- MA Governance and Public Management (research)
- MA Sociology (research)
- Or any other cognate discipline
The bursary is R60,000 over the period of two years (that is, R30,000 per year) and is for a student registered full-time. In exceptional circumstances and for an excellent student we will consider part-time registration (at R15,000 per year for 4 years).
Studies are to commence in the second semester of 2012, or latest at the beginning of 2013.

Please note that the prospective candidate will need to be accepted by the home department or discipline in which he/she has obtained their Honours level qualification. Acceptance of the applicant is contingent on such acceptance. The CSDA will, however, facilitate this process.
