“Take Action, Inspire Change, Make Every Day a Mandela Day”

 

July 18th was Mandela Day and was celebrated by Region 5, City of Tshwane, in Cullinan with special entertainment by Arts Revelation Song & Dance Ensemble and by Rugby, Netball and Soccer Sports Clinics run by the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, by Netball Gauteng North Association and by past Kaizer-Chiefs Player, Humphrey Mlawane from Region 7.

 

The Cullinan MANDELA DAY Event was managed by CDI International, a registered non-profit company (Public Benefit Organization), which is committed to facilitating Community Development Projects.

 

CDI International, in association with the Gauteng North Netball Association, the Blue Bulls Rugby Union and Cullinan Diamond Mine hosted a Sport Skills Development Programme for school children from Cullinan, Onverwacht, Refilwe, Rayton and Bronkhorspruit (Regions 5 and 7) and from Mabopane on Thursday, 18 July 2013 at the Cullinan Centenary Community Sport Centre. The aim of this Event was to introduce schoolchildren to Rugby, Netball and Soccer as a sport and as a youth and social development programme.

 

The Netball Skills Development Programme was managed by Claudine Claassen, Manager, Sport & Recreation, Eersterus, City of Tshwane.

 

The Rugby Skills Development Progarmme was managed by Martin Moshaba, Cluster Manager/Woman’s Rugby Co-ordinator, Blue Bulls Rugby Union.

 

The Soccer Skills Development Programme was managed by Humphrey Mlawane who previously played for Kaizer Chiefs and is from Region 7.

 

Entertainment was provided by Arts Revelation, an authentic African Dance and Song Ensemble comprising graduates from the University of Pretoria, the Cullinan Field Band and the Onverwacht Performing Arts Group.

 

School children from schools in Region 5 and 7 of the City of Tshwane and from Mabopane participated in the Cullinan Mandela Day Event.

 

School Teachers, Parents and Community Members were invited to attend the Event on Thursday, 18 July 2013. The Event was held at the Cullinan Centenary Community Sports Centre in Main Road, Cullinan.

 

A total of more than 500 people attended the Cullinan Mandela Day Event following the Mandela Day Theme of “Take Action, Inspire Change, Make Every Day a Mandela Day”.

 

Special Messages of Good will were received for the Youth of the City of Tshwane were received from Sports Ambassador of Trinidad & Tobago, Daren Ganga, and from South African Olympic swimming sensation, Chad Le Clos.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The feedback and reactions received from guests and participants was   excellent and very positive.  The   general recommendation was that similar Events and activities should be held   more regularly.

 

Teachers and schoolchildren   all requested the following:

  1. 1.       more comprehensive and ongoing Sport   Development Programmes and the establishment of tournaments;
  2. 2.       a Development Plan for Coaches, Players   and Administrators;
  3. 3.        a   plan for sport facilities and sport equipment in Schools in Regions 5 and 7

 

WHAT YOUNG PARTICIPANTS   RECEIVED AT THE CULLINAN MANDELA DAY EVENT

All participants signed registration forms and received the   following:

                                   i.              A T-Shirt (350 funded by Momentum and 200   provided by the City of Tshwane)

                                 ii.              A beanie sponsored by Petra Cullinan Diamond   Mine

                                iii.              A Certificate of Participation: designed by   CDII and printed by Petra Cullinan Diamond Mine

                               iv.              A lunch pack – a hotdog, packet of crisps and   a juice (300 sponsored by Spar and 250 provided by CDII)

                                 v.              A bottle of water (300 sponsored by Spar and   250 provided by CDII)

                               vi.              A fruit pack – two pieces of fruit (300   sponsored by Spar and 250 provided by CDII)

                              vii.              Transport to the Event which was arranged and   funded by Petra Cullinan Diamond Mine and, in specified cases, by the City of   Tshwane

 

All 15 Volunteers received a specially printed T-Shirt and were paid  plus transport. This was funded by Petra   Cullinan Diamond Mine.
