DUT official suspended for asking for sex

Durban – A university official has been suspended after allegedly trying to solicit sex from a first-year student in exchange for varsity accommodation.

The Durban University of Technology employee was suspended after the student’s guardian wrote a letter to senior university management to complain about the situation, reported the Times Live.

The female student from Newcastle was desperate to find accommodation since she had enrolled in January.

She was apparently very upset when she called the varsity official in question last month and was then called repeatedly by him for private meetings after lectures.

He then solicited sex in exchange for the housing number she needed to get accommodation. When she refused to agree, she was told there was no accommodation for her.

“She told me the most frightening news for any parent. She said the university staff member tried to solicit sex in exchange for a room on the campus housing stock.”

The student is now living in an informal settlement in Inanda.

A university spokesperson confirmed that the university official in question had been suspended but didn’t want to comment further on the case.
