UNISA under administration - Court orders retraction

By sylviahammond, 1 November, 2023

Eye Witness News (EWN) reports that the Pretoria High Court today (Wednesday 1 November 2023) ordered Minister Nzimande to retract his decision to place the University of South Africa (UNISA) under administration.

The timeline of events is as follows:

A report commissioned by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) into the management of UNISA identified instances of financial mismanagement and maladministration.

Minister Nzimande - in response to the report - on 27 August 2023 signed a Government Gazette appointing Professor Ihron Rensburg as Administrator at UNISA for a period of 24 months.

UNISA approached the court on 6 October 2023 seeking an interdict to prevent the administration order being implemented.

On 27 October 2023 Minister Nzimande went ahead with the decision.

On 1 November 2023 the Pretoria High Court found Minister Nzimande's action to be unlawful, and ordered a retraction of the gazetted decision.
