"Because the QCTO has come up with a new curriculum model and they are trying to force RPL into it.  Great for the novice learner (except for the workplace component - how many banks will let unemployed people in to act as tellers so that they…"

"My sentiments exactly!  Employers seem to like the idea of the QCTO (i guess intuitively it is appealing) but once they get a fuller picture of what it will mean in practice they have second thoughts.  It may work fine for 'blue…"

"Hi Des, at a recent BANKSETA event, Joe Samuels commented that the MBA level was being debated because a masters degree should contain 50% research in order to be called a masters and be pegged at masters level (NQF 9) but that as most SA masters…"

Engaging with learners using on-line tools In the flipped classroom

We are using the Edmodo platform to liaise with learners between classes. Edmodo is a free, on-line application that allows a “teacher” (it’s a system designed for schools) to hook up with “students’ by posting messages, quizzes, surveys, marks, chats, etc. I also used it for providing the learners with a library of articles for each class intervention and for doing the formative assessments. It’s a really cool app (well I thinks so) and its free, which of course makes it all the more…See More

Confessions from a flipped classroom - day 5

Posted on August 30, 2013 at 15:11 8 Comments

The learners have all just left, full of excitement to be going home after a full week.  Many mentioned feeling mentally tired from needing to think and constantly justify their arguments and points of view – good evidence for me that they really had been applying themselves.

The day started well.  Last evening before the learners left I referred them to skills universe and the blog page, so a few had actually read it before coming to class.  (I had not wanted to refer them…

Confessions from a flipped classroom – day 4

Posted on August 29, 2013 at 15:29 3 Comments

Today has been interesting.  The group is really getting to grips with the methodology and are participating beautifully – but I have had moments where I have not been in control at all.  The group has taken over the learning experiences almost entirely.  As I am writing this blog, two groups are standing around the assessment tools they designed yesterday and offering really constructive critique and feedback.  The level of their application is really impressive.  I have not seen this level…

Experiences from the flipped classroom - day 3

Posted on August 28, 2013 at 15:00 6 Comments

Today didn’t start off that well.  I started by asking how they were finding the methodology and the project they were working on (they are designing assessment tools, guides and activities a la the “Design and Develop OB assessment tools unit standard).  They reported being frustrated with their knowledge level in comparison to the tasks at hand.

We debated whether they would be in a better position if I had taught the theory (from experience of having done just that I know…
