Time to leave the boat?

Marie Smith replied to Des Squire's discussion Notional hours - what impact do they have?
"Des, I fully agree with you. If we don't comply, we are contributing to the poor education in the country that so many people are talking and complaining about. Our profession needs to sweep in front of our own doors. We - as part of the QA…"

Marie Smith replied to Des Squire's discussion Notional hours - what impact do they have?
"DK, the provider had been accredited for the programmes but the client had 'company specific' materials developed to be facilitated by the accredited provider - was not possible to check that the specific material had been approved. "

Marie Smith replied to Des Squire's discussion Notional hours - what impact do they have?
"DK, the story of the chain seems to be the reality. facilitators and assessors should, however, be firm enough on the principles they stand for, i.e. assuring quality of learning and assessment - not merely taking on offers because they can't…"

Marie Smith replied to Des Squire's discussion Notional hours - what impact do they have?
"Des, this is a very valid concern, which I also have - seems to be ore of a sausage machine for the provider to collect money, rather than being interested in whether the learner can acquire and apply the skills. In any case, with outcomes-based…"

"Dear Renee. Thank you - made me realise that this is possibly what they would like to see in the curriculum. They did not see the QMS as it is extension of scope with another SETA. "

Marie Smith replied to Marie Smith's discussion Learners not meeting entry requirements for a unit standard/skills programme in the group Learning Material Development
"Thank you, Hannes. Both RPL and counselling are in the provider's QMS. This is extension of scope with another SETA, so it may make sense to include in the Curriculum as well."

"Thanks, Pierre. That was my view too, that it serves as a guideline. Maybe they want to see in the Curriculum that counselling will be given, as suggested by Renee."

Renee' McGibbon replied to Marie Smith's discussion Learners not meeting entry requirements for a unit standard/skills programme in the group Learning Material Development

Hannes Nel replied to Marie Smith's discussion Learners not meeting entry requirements for a unit standard/skills programme in the group Learning Material Development
"Well, technically speaking SETAs have no say about entry requirements, because the are not quality assurance bodies. However, I understand what you mean. ETQAs used to be quite lenient about entry requirements when it comes to single unit standards.…"

Pierre Wepener replied to Marie Smith's discussion Learners not meeting entry requirements for a unit standard/skills programme in the group Learning Material Development

Hi, Marie, we are still in the initiation phase of the establishment of SAPTA. We had our founding meeting in November 2012 in which an Executive Council was elected. SAPTA has been registered with CIPRO. Three dedicated work groups were established to focus on the pivotal areas, namely: Governance; Membership/certification and Marketing/administration.

We plan to have our first networking breakfast sometime in April in which we will invite all interested stakeholders to join us and a more formal event in June 2013.

Essentially, SAPTA's vision is to instill and foster a culture of professionalism amongst trainers and to be the custodian of the rights, interests and needs of trainers. Indeed a tall order, but we have a fantastic ExCo and work group members to drive the process.

You are welcome to register and/or volunteer for the work groups. Our next meeting will be mid-February. SAPTA will be using Skills Universe and LinkedIn as communication platforms.

Hi Marie

it would seem we have a glitsch - CIMAP website has a full page explaining the RPL facility as well as a list of available qualifications under News and Views.  E-mail seems to be working fine but have not received anything from you today.  Please give me a call on 079 346 2298 if you continue having problems?

Thanks 'Henriette

Time for pest control in education and training?

Posted on June 28, 2014 at 10:21 0 Comments

My summary of background is to contextualise my concerns.

I have been a co-owner of a small/medium retail business for 10 years, sandwiched between training and development experience totalling more than 20 years, in smaller organisations (but with contracts from major national companies) and large organisations. So I have been exposed to and practice best practice in education and training and I am also au fait with retail marketing techniques.

I remain puzzled (I can't say…

Evaluating learning material to be acquired or developed

Posted on July 31, 2012 at 12:56 19 Comments

When deciding on a developer or a supplier of off-the-shelf SAQA-aligned outcomes-based learning material and assessments, the Training Provider's dilemma is how to evaluate the potential contractor or supplier.

Some time ago, the question arose of what guidelines can be given to training providers when they have to decide on contracting a designer/developer of outcomes-based learning material and assessments or when they buy 'off-the-shelf' material.

The suggestions that…
