Catherine Anne Robertson replied to sylvia hammond's discussion What is the difference between "work integrated learning" and "work-based learning"?
"They may not necessarily be one and the same thing, Sylvia.  I only read the other comments after I had put my response together and I think we are all saying the same thing.  I see work-integrated learning or WIL as a…"

Catherine Anne Robertson replied to Claire Fowler's discussion Accreditation of unit standards versus whole qualifications - clarity required in the group Training Service Providers
"The troubling matter about this interesting and well-articulated debate is that changes to the education and training arena are not stabilizing and that as soon as the training provider 'gets it', it takes another roadshow or yet another…"

Catherine Anne Robertson replied to Des Squire's discussion What NQF Level is an MBA degree?
"It's a Masters of Business Administration, as everyone else has pointed out, so Level 9.  Source?  The university that offers it.  They would have registered it as such since it conforms with all the requirements for a…"

Catherine Anne Robertson replied to Johan Kruger's discussion Can anybody train people without any formal training
"My understanding is that all facilitators should be registered assessors as one cannot train without assessing, otherwise what are those being trained going to get for their money?  Why be trained if you cannot be certified?  Or is this…"

Catherine Anne Robertson replied to Des Squire's discussion Why do we resist change?
"Very thought-inspiring, wise comments, thank you Des.  We need to concentrate on how we think about things rather than be negative about them.  I especially love that little verse that reminds us to change what we can, leave what we…"

I would like to respond to Des Squire's thought-provoking comments.

Firstly, I do not think that yet another vocational institution needs to be introduced to an already totally confused public.  I agree that South Africans are title- and status-behep and that to be able to tell people that they were at a university of any kind, vocational or not, would most probably thrill the person to bits, but universities are really for academics and vocational learning should take place…

Response to reconsidering NSDS III

I couldn't agree with Des more. In Germany, they have the dual system which is similar to what he is advocating, however with notable differences. No student is self-enrolled at a vocational college. The employer enrols an employee onto a programme (not necessarily technical; it could be hospitality or tourism or even business administration) which is usually in the form of an apprenticeship. The training is usually 3 years long. The employee pays nothing, but receives a salary from the… Continue

Skills development money starts flowing

I think it is an absolute tragedy that our schools are letting us down to such an extent that children have to be re-taught the basics in order to enter not only institutions of higher learning, but FET colleges as well. Out of every 20 young people tested for the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) readiness at level 2 (post Grade 9), at least 3 out of every 5 are not at the appropriate mathematics or language proficiency level! These young people have to be re-trained so that they are not… Continue

Hi Cathy - welcome to our skills-universe & if you add your photo I can feature you at the top of the members page. Please feel free to join the Western Cape group and as many other groups as you are interested in. I'm sure that you can make a really important contribution to our site & I see that you have already waded in on FET colleges. Unfortunately, some of our members are definitely "glass half empty" people, so I welcome your contribution with your experience to counter some of the ill-informed criticism & focus on some of the really excellent work that is being done. Great to have you with us & of course, please invite your friends & colleagues to join.
