Former TETA CEO finally sentenced - after 17 years

By sylviahammond, 19 October, 2024

This week, the Daily Maverick reported on the sentencing of the former  Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pieter Hendrick Bothma. It has taken 17 years, but the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) finally prevailed.

Many of the most recent entrants to the skills development world may still have been at school or studying, and the rest of us had probably forgotten about the events leading to this sentence, so a brief explanation is required.

Some will remember the Fidentia Asset Management scandal involving J Arthur Brown and Steven Goodwin. J Arthur Brown has already served part of his sentence and been released.

Bothma received bribes of R4.2 million and R1.9 million from Brown and Goodwin respectively. In return he arranged for R245 million of TETA funds to be invested in Fidentia Asset Management. The Daily Maverick reports that only R15 million has been recovered.

The sentences are:

7 years direct imprisonment for fraud,

14 years for two counts of corruption, and

7 years for money laundering. All sentences run concurrently.

Skills development practitioners may be able to calculate just how many people could have been trained for the monies lost by the TETA.
