Good Day All,

I've heard that matriculants who didnt make it last year will be given a chance to re-write their exams early next year. I have a brother who didnt make it last year and qualified for supplementary early this year (May) but unfortunately he was not successful. Does anyone have more detailed information regarding the chance government is willing to give them i.e dates etc? Are there any institutions that still allow students to improve their grade 12 results around JHB and Eastern Cape?

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
A

Hi,
Unfortunately I can't answer, but I have a simular question. A matriculant of last year passed Math Literacy, but wants to do pure Mathematics. How can this person upgrade to Mathematics? How long will this take? What about the portfolio of evidence?

Thanks
Nico
Hi Nico,

You situation is a bit tricky for me to answer as I am not too sure of the procedure to follow. I have read that an upgrade can be done by a private or finishing school. The argument that was raised was that it would be impossible for a grade 12 student who has done maths Literacy to upgrade to Mathematics in one year hence Maths literacy does not have a basic foundation needed and therefore would require for a student to complete grade 10 and 11 mathematics or go to a private or finishing school for one year. It was said that the National Dep of Education should consider putting policies and support structures in place for these "upgrade learners" to eventually be able to write their Grade 12 Mathematics as private candidates over a 2year period.

Maybe you can find out from the Department of Education. From what I can gather, it can be done.

A

The department of education responds to this query as follows. Please note this applies irrespective of whether the learner is still at school or has already completed matric.

Subject changes are allowed where the candidate already achieved the NSC and want to improve HE admission – see attached extract from regulations.

He can register as a part time candidate with any of the accredited examination centres. Unfortunately because his portfolio was not in Mathematics but in Mathematical Literacy, he will have to meet the portfolio requirements for Mathematics.

Extract from the NSC Policy document

8.         Changing of subjects in Grades 10, 11 and 12

(1)        A learner may change a maximum of two subjects in Grade 10, subject to the approval of the Principal of the school where the learner is registered.

(2)        A learner may change two subjects in Grade 11, subject to the approval of the Principal of the school where the learner is registered.

(3)        In exceptional cases a learner may change one subjects in Grade 12, provided it is done before 31 January of the Grade 12-year.

(4)        Approval for changing a subject in Grade 12 must be obtained from the Head of the assessment body, provided the following are furnished:

(a)        a letter of motivation from the learner’s parent or guardian;

(b)        a letter from the Principal, either supporting or providing reasons for not supporting the change; and

(c)        a letter from the subject teacher, outlining the programme to be followed to assist the learner in covering those aspects of the curriculum statements for the previous grade that were not covered.

(5)        The closing date for changing a subject or subjects in Grade 10 and 11 must be determined by the Head of the assessment body, based on the impact of the change on the internal assessment programme.

(6)     National Senior Certificate candidates who sat for the National Senior Certificate examination and who wish to repeat the whole National Senior Certificate qualification obtained, may do so provided that the candidate:

(a)     provides documentary evidence that he or she has offered the National Senior Certificate; and

(b)    registers with an accredited assessment body with the aim of ensuring that all the School-Based Assessment, Practical Assessment Task (PAT), Practical Assessment and Oral requirements for all subjects that will be offered for the improved qualification are met.

(7)     National Senior Certificate candidates who sat for the National Senior Certificate examination and who wish to register for a subject not offered in the said National Senior Certificate examination with the aim of meeting faculty requirements at a higher education institution, may do so, provided that the candidate:

Hi Des, can our Academy contact you for more detailed info or references. I would like to put up the info on our website as well as be able to email it to potential candidates who enquire. Dont seem to find any one place that gives all the information and processes explained properly. Would like to help contribute towards resolving the questions students have about rewriting

Yes you can change from Maths literacy to Mathematics given that you are learning at an Institute that submit your Portfolio Marks to the department.
